Product Quick Selection Wheel

In September 2019, Lend Lease approached Powerbox to design and build an industrial AC UPS for their world-first pilot project which will turn brown coal from Victoria's Latrobe Valley into hydrogen.

The Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain (HESC) project will test the feasibility of producing hydrogen from brown coal and shipping it to Japan for use in their domestic market.

The one-year project, led by an Australian / Japanese Consortium, will begin in mid-2020, with production to be handled at a plant adjacent to the Loy Yang power station.

It will use 160 tonnes of brown coal from Loy Yang's mine to create three tonnes of hydrogen which will be shipped to Japan in a specially-designed boat.

The Solution

Using CE+T Power’s Flexa 25 platform, Powerbox designed and built a dual-redundant, cabinetised, online AC UPS system to power the project’s critical AC loads from dual strings of 600Ah, 20-year design-life, VRLA batteries.

The benefit of using the CE+T Flexa inverters is that they charge the UPS systems batteries and support AC loads without the need of rectifiers or a  static switch. Rectifiers add additional costs to a system and Static switches are a common point of failure.

As part of the project, Lend Lease requested an isolated, dual redundant, 24 VDC @ 3kW power supply with distribution. For reliability, Powerbox selected convection-cooled, hot-swappable industrial-grade converters manufactured in Germany by our long-term partner, Schäfer Elektronik GmbH.
